Abstract Tulip

Abstract Tulip Inspired By Georgia O’Keeffe

It felt like I found a treasure  when I saw this flower on a walk one spring morning. The abstract elements that O’Keeffe loved to paint were present in this abstract flower, with natural swirls and vibrant colors. I was immediately reminded of her paintings.

I have always been inspired by the designs and style of Georgia O’Keeffe. My abstract Tulip painting “Open Tulip” was inspired by O’Keeffe’s abstract flowers.

Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986) was a major figure in American art . She painted almost exclusively, the flowers, animal bones, and landscapes around her home.

Painting an Abstract Flower

I started with a base outline of my flower and then lay out the bold and bright colors. I knew this painting needed to be done quickly and relied on my brush work. It would loose it’s delicate appearance if I overworked the painting.

I very quickly created the lines on the leaf and moved into the background lines to tie the composition together. I later manually cropped the painting to eliminate the feeling of the image falling off the page. Fitting closer to the original composition.

Georgia O’Keeffe saw lines, colors and shapes in the nature she observed around her home. I then went looking for inspiration in nature from her example and was startled to find beautiful design elements created by the wind, flash storms and the sunshine of spring. I found the abstract in real life.
